A critical nature report that was killed by Donald Trump has just been released independently.
The findings are extremely grim:
- Freshwater Crisis: Ecosystems across the U.S. are “overdrawn, polluted, and invaded.”
- Marine Decline: Our oceans are degrading with rapidly declining biodiversity.
- Extinction Risk: 34% of plant species and 40% of animal species across the U.S. are now at risk of disappearing forever.
Thankfully, brave and resilient scientists found a workaround to get this information out to the American people. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their efforts, but this short-term band-aid is not a permanent solution. Ultimately, no organization has the reach or resources of the federal government.
Now that the Trump Administration has decimated our environmental agencies and worked to erase years of critical climate and environmental research, we face a massive uphill battle. We will have to spend years or even decades rebuilding our government’s scientific capabilities from the ground up.
